Crime, Guns & Solutions: What Are We Doing to Stop the Flow of Guns in Illinois?
In this City Club of Chicago event, Crime Lab and Education Lab Director of Programs Kim Smith participated in a panel with law enforcement officials discussing how Illinois is fighting the flow of illegal weapons in the State.
The Chicago Police Department recovers roughly 12,000 illegal guns off the street annually. The flow of these weapons contributes to gun violence and happens through three primary channels:
- Unlicensed dealing
- Straw purchasing
- Theft
The good news is that recently implemented regulations have helped the State of Illinois take positive action.
